This is the official app for Ireland’s national pavilion at the 54th Venice Biennale exhibition which will be held 4 June – 27 November 2011. The contemporary sculptor Corban Walker is representing Ireland in Venice and the app complements the presentation of three site-specific sculptural installations at the pavilion. Using industrial materials such as glass, aluminium, steel and Plexiglas, the artist’s work is often a rule based response to mathematical principles that derive from Corban Walker’s own height of four feet and how he navigates the world. The app features information about this fascinating artist and images of some recent projects such as his collaboration with the basketball player Shaquille O’Neal. The app includes an introduction to the concepts behind the Venice installation, and an exclusive video interview with the artist in his studio describing the creative process and the inspiration for the work at Venice with a “tour” of the pavilion’s scale model. It also includes several high-resolution photographs of the completed installation. The app provides practical information about how to find the Irish pavilion in Venice and the exhibition in general.

“La Biennale di Venezia is one of the world’s most important forums for the dissemination and illumination of current developments in international art” – Bice Curiger, Director of the Biennale

Ireland is one of 88 countries invited to participate in the Biennale and the app for the Irish Pavilion will be a useful and interesting addition to visitors either in advance of or during the Biennale, but also for those with general interest in Corban Walker’s work and the national presentations in Venice.

Ireland at Venice is an initiative of Culture Ireland in partnership with the Arts Council / an Chomhairle Ealaίon.
